While the snappy and super responsive E Ink Carta 1200 screen is now available on several ereaders, including the next-best Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, the Libra 2 performs better than the competition. It's a fantastic all-around champion that should be your first port of call when buying an ereader. We gave the Kobo Libra 2 full marks in our review, which should really say all you need to know, and we haven't changed our minds since testing it in 2021. There is hope, however, with a new display called E Ink Gallery 3 set to debut on the PocketBook Viva some time soon and this, according to both E Ink and PocketBook, should allow colors to be more saturated.įrom there, you need to consider if you want an ereader that can take a dip in the bath or a pool, such as the Kobo Libra 2 and Amazon Kindle Paperwhite, and whether you want a reader with physical page-turn buttons.ĭespite newer models on the market, the Kobo Libra 2 is still the best overall ereader you can get because it offers great bang for your buck. While color ereaders exist, they're hard to recommend with the E Ink Kaleido screen technology as colors are still muted. Whatever your needs are, all ereaders use similar E Ink technology which, at the time of writing, is usually the Carta 1200 screen, so they all display crisp text and fonts that look better on a grayscale screen. Are you a student or a researcher? You could considering a note-taking ereader. Have a vast collection of EPUBs or prefer to borrow from your local library? Perhaps Kobo is the way to go if you live outside the US. You can pick up the Paperwhite with 8GB or 32GB of storage, and it comes in both Wi-Fi and cellular variants.Love comics and graphic novels? You'll want a color ereader. In terms of battery life, Amazon promises up to 10 weeks of endurance on a single charge. The Paperwhite 11th Gen offers faster page turns thanks to the new chipset and comes with a USB-C charging port. The Paperwhite also features adjustable Warm Light for a comfortable reading experience at night and packs 17 LEDs vs just 4 LEDs on the base Kindle. It also has a sharper display, offering 300 pixels per inch compared to 167 pixels per inch on the entry-level Kindle. With the Paperwhite, you get a larger 6.8-inch E-ink display and thinner borders. Sitting in the middle between the entry-level Kindle and the luxurious Kindle Oasis, Paperwhite strikes the perfect balance between price and performance.Īmazon refreshed the Paperwhite lineup in September last year, introducing the Kindle Paperwhite 11th Gen and Paperwhite Signature Edition. But if you can spend more, the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is the best option. The base Kindle nails the fundamentals and has all the essentials. A single charge will keep your Kindle running for up to six weeks. And since it's a Kindle, you have nothing to worry about battery life. That means you can charge it using the same charger and cable you charge your phone and other devices with. Another significant update is that the entry-level Kindle finally ditches micro-USB in favor of a USB-C port. But, as far as sharpness is concerned, the base Kindle is now on equal footing with the Paperwhite and Oasis. It does miss out on features like adaptive brightness and Warm Light. The most significant upgrade on the 11th Gen Kindle is the display, which is now much sharper at 300 pixels-per-inch compared to the low-res 167 PPI screen of the Kindle 10th Gen. The Kindle 11th Gen (2022) offers a 6-inch e-ink glare-free display with chunky bezels and an all-plastic design. The latest Kindle 11th Gen (2022) is a big step up from its predecessor, with the updated model borrowing many of the premium features of the Paperwhite. This is a perfect choice if you just want to experience the goodness of an ebook reader without any extras or luxury. The base Kindle model is the most affordable e-reader in the lineup.
